Autumn has Arrived

in Seasonal Routines

Autumn is the start of the Vata Season. The temperatures become cooler, the air is drier, and the days get shorter. Ayurveda understands that to remain healthy, we must stay in harmony with the cycles of nature. Vata season requires warm, nurturing activities as part of our daily routine.

One of the best ways to start the day is with a breakfast of stewed apples. Nature provides us an abundance of sweet, juicy apples in the Fall.

The following recipe is so simple to prepare and has tremendous health benefits. It helps to return moisture to the dry body tissues. The fiber in cooked apples relieves constipation. Apples are filled with anti-oxidents, helping to ward off cancers. The spice combination fights winter colds, mucous and lung congestion.

Stewed Apple Breakfast
1 sweet, organic apple (peeled and cut into small pieces)
1pinch each of cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger powder
5 cloves
A handful of dried fruit (raisins, dates, prunes OR figs)

Cook all of the above in ½ cup of water until the fruit is soft.
Discard cloves
Top off with a dab of ghee
Sprinkle with chopped up almonds. (Almonds should be soaked and skins peeled)
Eat warm and enjoy!

An Apple a day, keeps the doctor away!
